Stainless Steel in a Marine Environment

316 Stainless steel derives it’s resistance to corrosion primarily due to the addition of chromium, molybdenum and nickel, which improves resistance to oxidation, corrosion and pitting.

316 stainless steel will naturally form a chromium oxide film on it’s surface. This is what makes it rust and stain resistant. However if the surface is contaminated with other metals, grease or marine growth then the film cannot replenish.
